Job Summary
The primary responsibility for this position is to provide assistance for the Lab Manager with the planning and performing of all laboratory tests, with the day-to-day maintenance of the lab and all equipment, and with the recording of all pertinent information for each test. This position reports to the Lab Manager.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist the Lab Manager with the planning and performing of lab experiments using our mixing equipment on end user supplied material, the recording of test parameters and methods, collecting samples as required, measuring results, and recording complete and pertinent information.
- Use the information provided on the lab request form to outline lab test procedures and define expected results.
- Follow up and provide feedback to customers on delivery of their ingredients to be used for lab testing.
- Maintain the lab, all lab equipment, and supplies in a neat and efficient manner, and thoroughly clean all equipment after each use.
- When required, take video of the equipment set up and the test to support end user requests, as well as to assist the Marketing team with videos of our equipment in action.
- Work with our Application Engineers to understand and calculate scale-up/down parameters such as flow rate, tip speed, intensity, tank turns, power draw, etc. as they apply to lab testing.
- With respect to witness testing, provide a friendly, accommodating, and professional environment during the customers visit.
- Understand and operate a variety of ancillary supporting equipment including the lab balance/scale, the Brookfield Viscometer, the binocular microscope, the Malvern particle size analyzer, the pH meter, various hand tools, and all other miscellaneous process equipment such as valves, flow meters, pressure gauges, etc.
- Assist with the development and seeding of information of a historical lab testing database to be used by our Sales and Marketing team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have solid communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to handle tasks, manage workload, and prioritize work unsupervised.
- Basic computer skills are a must … Word, Excel, database use and management.
- Solid focus on safe work habits and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Must be mechanically inclined and able to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Top-notch sense of urgency to handle customer needs in a timely and efficient manner.
- Good working knowledge of CRM systems.
- Excellent customer service and follow up skills.
- Willingness to spend many hours on the phone with customers.
- Must enjoy and be passionate about working with customers.
- Strong ability to work in a team environment.
- Solid organizational skills.
- Top-notch sense of urgency to handle customer needs in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ability to understand and interpret SDS sheets.
Credentials and Experience
- Previous experience working in a laboratory environment is preferred.
- A degree or educational focus in Food Science or a technical curriculum is preferred.
- Understanding of fluid process and typical food/beverage facility operation is preferred.
Special Requirements
- This position will cross-train with the production team to learn about how our products are assembled / disassembled, as well as how they function mechanically. During busy times, the Lab Assistant may be called on to assist the production team.
Training and Development
- The training period is expected to be approximately 3 months. The training will focus on understanding how to use the laboratory equipment, lab testing procedures, and the fundamentals of putting together a lab test report.
